The Art Duo
Justin & Karen Weber, art-school-sweethearts, from the great …small state of Delaware, work as a freelance creative duo in Brooklyn, New York. Initially bonding over a shared love for illustration, travel, and play, the two became inseparable in 2010 - sharing a studio, “The Prism,” that became a haven for community and plenty of creative chaos. In 2013 they took a big, double-leap into marriage and life in NYC. After a few years of working “job-jobs” they took a wild opportunity to do an art residency in Spain, and on the other side, the wide open, undefined, freelance life. A core practice of illustration & design soon expanded to include film & photo set design for Karen and circus performance for Justin.
Both having been raised in the church, they shared a common faith and an opinion that there might be a better way to visually communicate the concepts of Christianity, as well as more space for honesty about the uncomfortable, taboo, and scary things in life. They expected to address these ideas here and there in their personal and creative life, but they had no idea what was coming next…
During a “working-remote” winter in Tokyo in 2018, a curious email popped up from a New Yorker named Melina Smith, who had an ambitious idea and a need for a designer. Common ground and shared passion were an easy match and the three dove into the whirlwind of creating a new world, Storymakers NYC.
J+K hope that the next kids coming up won’t be sheltered out of fear or taught by technology, but be introduced to this complex and beautiful world by loving adults that trust God with the process. They are honored to be a part of creating the visual language at Storymakers and hope that these tools will meet the needs of the next generation.
