St. George & Sparks

We believe story is the entrance to our children’s hearts and minds. It is in our very name. God’s story, the narrative found in the Bible, is the foundation of all of our work. However, there are other stories that we want to share with you and our children because they too show God at work. One of our goals for Sparks is to share these additional stories, historical ones based on real-life people, to allow children and adults to connect with the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds all of us, as described in Hebrews 11.

These stories remind us that God works through normal people like you and me.

While our main goal will never change— we are committed to creating new ways to tell God’s redemptive narrative found in the Bible— we do want to share stories for children and adults to learn about others who have been Storymakers before us. We begin with the story of St. George, a Cappadocian Greek soldier in the Roman Army who died in 303 AD.

Through the script we provide and the fun DIY dragons you create, we hope the legend of St. George reminds us all that we too have a Savior.

As G. K. Chesterton once wrote, “Fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.” Our children are always aware of scary things, whether illness or sadness or pain, but our hope in sharing this legend is to remind them that someone has come to conquer all the sadness and brokenness in our world, that through his death and resurrection, Jesus has slain the dragon that threatened to destroy us.
